Local Events

The Justice William O. Douglas Memorial Hike takes place along a western section of the C&O Canal National Historical Park. The annual event, sponsored by the C&O Canal Association, honors the Supreme Court Justice whose famous 1954 hike led to the preservation of the canal and to its inclusion in the National Park System.

Hikers gather at the Paw Paw Tunnel picnic area. At 10 a.m., buses carry them upstream for their choice of a 5-or 10-mile return hike on the canal towpath. A bus fee is collected. Reservations are not required. For further information, call 301-942-2528.

Paw Paw Community Farm Market at Paw Paw School is open [the -ed.] first and third Saturdays [in -ed.] June, July, and August [from -ed.] 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine. Contact Cheryl Irwin at 304-947-7767 for more information.                                              from The Morgan Messenger, May2, 2007

The annual William H. Norton Parade, to honor and remember US War Veterans takes place every Memorial Day weekend on Saturday at 1p.m., with lineup at 12 noon. Just before the parade, at 11a.m., a ceremony is held at the Paw Paw Veterans Monument in the center of town. After the parade an awards ceremony is held at the Paw Paw School.

The Berkeley Springs Farmers Market features fresh produce from local farmers. The Berkeley Springs Farmers Market provides a venue for local growers and vendors to sell their produce and handmade jams, breads, and jellies directly to the consumer. The Market is held every Sunday from the first of May to the end of October, from 10am to 2pm . Several special events are scheduled during the season for community participation such as the peach pie and pumpkin carving contests.

The Morgan County Fair takes place in Berkeley Springs, the first week of August each year. Our County Fair offers a myriad of things to do, observe, compete in, and enjoy such as: a petting zoo, pony rides, horseshoe tournaments, an animal naturalist, live hawk and butterfly presentations, search and rescue dog team demonstrations, all day movies, archery demonstrations and contests, local authors book signings, a history chair, a civil war encampment, barbershop comedy quartet, and bagpipes and gospel music just to name a few.

The Apple Butter Festival is held every year over the Columbus Day weekend. This is the culminating event marking the end of the apple season here in the Eastern Panhandle. It features apple butter making in the town square all day long, a parade, arts, crafts, music and entertainment, games, contests, and lots of food, especially apple butter. It's my favorite fall event - it's one you don't want to miss!
